People Tree are delighted to share that two of our gorgeous models and ambassador, Dean Newcombe and Sofi Bevan have decided to do an incredible fundraiser this Christmas in aid of our charity the People Tree Foundation.

Safia & Dean Swallows

Dean Newcombe has been working with us at People Tree for four years and has even travelled with us to Bangladesh to meet the Fair Trade producers behind the clothes he models. Dean was incredibly inspired by the producers he met and the work of Fair Trade in developing communities economically and in giving dignified work for fair wages. Dean became a People Tree ambassador along with other key opinion leaders in fashion this year. Watch the video of Dean’s trip here.

Dean and Sofi will be raising funds for Swallows. Swallows is a Fair Trade producer group, beautifully situated in Thanapara, North West Bangladesh on the banks of the Ganges, a 6 hour drive from the capital Dhaka. They will be walking 419km’s across Japan, from Coast to Coast. During this walk, they will also be raising awareness of rights of garment workers. The idea is that Dean and Sofi will mimic the hours of work and calories of garment workers working in sweatshops across the globe. Walking 14-16 hours a day for 7 days continuously, taking only one hour break. Sofi will be eating as little as 1,800 calories per day and Dean eating as little as 2,400 calories a day, the estimated calories of Cambodian and Bangladeshi garment workers.

Dean & Rebecca Swallows School

Swallows is a fantastic organization which helps over 200 economically disadvantaged women and funds a school for 200 local children aged 5-12. Swallows and People Tree have worked together for over 23 years, helping provide employment in embroidering, hand weaving and tailoring. Swallows mission is, ‘… to empower the poor and underprivileged population by eradicating illiteracy, creating health awareness and self-employment, raising awareness among the landless for the rights of land and empowering women by creating economic and social awareness.’ Not only do Swallows provide free training and then decent employment, but they also provide many micro credit services, education and health support to the local community. They work to raise awareness on violence against women, offering legal support facilities to victims of abuse.

We really hope that you will support Sofi and Dean on this test of endurance. Please also spread their story using the hashtag #walk4work and @peopletree and help raise awareness for garment workers who work in sweatshop like conditions, and promote the fact that change is possible through Fair Trade!

Please donate generously though this link and share it with your family and friends, the aim is to raise £2000 for Swallows!
