Today on the People Tree blog, we have a special guest post from one of our favourite writers. Columnist and features writer Lucy Mangan, who writes for The Guardian and The Stylist, talks to People Tree about her favourite picks and gifts for the festive season.

Polar Bear Hat £22, Scarf £32 and Mittens £24

I probably wouldn’t be able to carry off all three at once but I would very much like to try. I would cheer a chilly populace right up.

Brass Ring £6

I don’t suit silver but don’t like bright gold/yellow metal jewellery and this would be just perfect, as well as attractive in itself.

Wise Owl Jumper £95

I would buy this for anyone – it’s monochrome (so it will go with any wardrobe) without being boring, and quirky without being alienating. Conservative dressers will think it’s got a bit of a kick and more ebullient types will be glad to have something they can turn to when they think they’ve got to look respectable.  AND I’ve adored owls ever since I fell in love with Plop in The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark.

Nina Fleece Dress £68

I feel that self-gifting is a VERY important part of the present-buying process, so this is for me. It’s warm, comfortable enough to work in yet easily nice enough to go for a revivifying walk round the park or to the café in. This makes it my autumn/winter sartorial Holy Grail.

Long Sleeved White Nightgown £35

Long Sleeved White Nightgown £35 I’m always so happy when someone buys me something to wear to bed. It says “I love you! I want you to look lovely and be toasty-slash-diaphanously-cool-and-beautiful-delete-according-to-season even when I am not there and nobody can see you! I am always thinking of you, see!” And I would give them in very much the same spirit. Apart from anything else, if you wrote all that down in a card, you might seem a bit mad”

Burgundy Peter Jensen Dress £68

I’m self-gifting again. Why? Because this dress is lovely. Because it has rabbits on it and because it’s burgundy, which is not only very Autumn but very This Autumn. But mostly, my friends, because this dress has a moveable waist and so do I. This is a dress that likes you as you are. This dress doesn’t judge. This is a good dress. And you could, if you were a much nicer person than me, give it as a gift to an equally normal-shaped friend too.

Tree Tee in Grey or White £35

Anybody would love this and you just couldn’t go wrong with it, but I might be tempted especially to give it to a runner or gym-loving friend who needs something to pull on after exercising (I hear tell – I wouldn’t know from personal experience. That’s why I need dresses with moveable waists) without getting overheated and still looking a little bit different and a little bit great.
