People Tree Founder and CEO Safia Minney is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the Global Fair Trade Week. This week, Fair Trade Organisations from all around the world have gathered in Rio to discuss the system of Fair Trade.
Carol Willis, Honorary Member of the World Fair Trade Organization, gave a speech introducing the conference and asking a timely question:
“In a world in which ordinary people everywhere feel powerless to change anything and even democratic processes seem to achieve little, is it Fair Trade that offers a beacon of hope to people?“
Carol explained that Fair Trade “is an opportunity to be a part of the solution” and can be used to “create a just, equitable and sustainable world in which every person can realise their rights, fulfil their potential and live free from poverty.” She also discussed the importance of the new WFTO mark for products, including crafts and clothing made by small producers.
Rio International Fair Trade Fashion Show
This week, People Tree is presenting a Fair Trade Fashion Show for 400 invited guests from the international Fair Trade movement and the Brazilian social and solidarity economy.
The show will feature Fair Trade Fashion from 5 continents and represents work created by over 10,000 artisans.
