This week, from 10th-16th October, is Wool Week! The annual campaign celebrates the fibre and fabric, and the works to promote the virtues of buying wool. This season we’re embracing the heritage of hand knits, updating classic styles and showcasing lasting design. We use New Zealand, mulesing-free wool that is spun, dyed with azo-free dyes and hand knitted in Nepal by our partner Kumbeshwar Technical School.

KTS artisans at their knitathon, celebrating World Fair Trade Day

KTS is a Fair Trade organisation that was originally set up to help people born into the Pode caste in Nepal. People born into the Pode cast were expected to clean the streets and sewers of areas inhabited by higher castes. These people faced discrimination and until very recently, Pode children did not go to school at all. This meant their chances in life were incredibly limited.

People Tree’s partnership with KTS provides underprivileged women, disabled people and widows with vocational training and job opportunities where there would otherwise be none. Not only this, but as a result KTS is also able to provide medical and social support, and offer children’s and adult’s literacy classes so that artisans and their families can develop valuable skills – helping them find a way out of poverty, and away from prejudice.

“People Tree’s orders are vital to KTS, to me, my family, my colleagues and grass-roots female producers in my country. Fair Trade orders empower people socially and economically and mean we can educate ourselves and our children. Knowing this inspires me to work hard. I pray for the success of Fair Trade fashion and People Tree.”

            Laxmi, a Knitter with KTS

In addition to providing good jobs for thousands of people, KTS puts profits from Fair Trade back into their community development – they support a school, a day care centre, and an orphanage – providing an education to over 350 children from low-income families.
