Behind the scenes at a Fair Trade fashion photo shoot

Today we’re bringing you a behind the scenes look at what it’s like to work at People Tree. Becky joined People Tree’s Merchandising and Buying team in February this year. Meet Becky and discover what inspires her to work in Fair Trade fashion.

People Tree: So what were you doing before you joined People Tree?

Becky: I was travelling in South America for 9 months. I experienced Carnival in Rio, visited the glaciers of Patagonia and traveled to the northern most tip of Colombia. While traveling, I volunteered caring for Howler monkeys in Bolivia and taught sports to children in Peru. I learned so much through this adventure.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in Fair Trade fashion? What’s special about People Tree?

When I was in university, I traveled to countries in the developing world such as India, Nepal, Guatemala and Nicaragua. In these countries, I learned more about the impact of poverty – especially on women. Traveling opened my eyes, gave me a broader perspective – and inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a lasting difference.

When I heard about People Tree I was really excited to learn more and to contribute. People Tree is making a change and improving the lives of people working in the garment industry, where typically women work in such horrendous conditions to produce clothes for our throw away fashion culture in the UK. Fair Trade fashion provides an alternative – a way to contribute to sustainable development and to make a real impact. There is still a long way to go, but what People Tree is doing is very impressive and I am proud to be part of it.

What was it like to be a part of your first photo shoot?

Going to the shoot was quite exciting, the location was really cool, and it was generally a pretty fun day! I enjoyed watching the models being made up and setting up the scene for the photos and the shots using different props against the different backgrounds. The clothes looked amazing and it was great to see the final product after all the preparation put into creating them.

Your first photo shoot was for our new Fall Collection, which is coming soon. What is a trend you’re excited to rock for fall?

I love the knits, especially the this gorgeous hand knit yellow cardigan, which will bring a little sunshine into the dark winter nights.

I also cannot wait to wear the new glamorous red rose print party dress for a trip to the theatre.

I am also excited about wearing the new monochrome jewellery – the black and white bracelet and earrings will add touch of elegance and style to any outfit.

What are your top three People Tree products for the summer?

For days in the office, I adore the Lauren Sweetpea Dress (£65), it looks lovely in every situation and fits to perfection. For relaxing on the weekend, my pick is the Audrey Red Heart Dress (was £60, now on sale for £36). It’s a great summer dress – really easy to wear and stands out in a crowd. I also love the Lora Monochrome Dress (was £80, now £48). With its funky print it can look cool and smart for work or for a day out in the sunshine!

Thanks Becky for telling us about you and for giving our readers a peek behind the scenes at People Tree!
