In the run up to World Fair Trade Day, we are celebrating their theme, ‘Be an Agent for Change’, by profiling the independent stores who are all, in their own ways, agents of change. Each day this week, we’ll be looking at different stockists that we work with, all of who advocate and work towards a more ethical, more sustainable, and more Fair Trade world.
Today, we’re staying in London and celebrating The Keep Boutique in Brixton Village!
Owned by Kate Richards, the boutique stocks a carefully sourced range of clothes, accessories, and jewellery. In Safia Minney’s Slow Fashion book, Kate says “What I’m doing is small scale, but I think that stores like mine are fantastic in terms of raising awareness by showcasing brands that are much more transparent about their practices.” We certainly agree!
If you’re in Brixton Village, here are Kate’s top recommendations!
- For a cup of coffee, it’s almost always Federation Coffee, their house espresso is roasted in North London by Campbell & Symme, a speciality coffee company that aims to highlight the excellence of coffee growing and production at origin, visiting farms to develop close relationships with producers. You can also pick up a cork Keep cup at Federation, with a free cup of coffee included if you do!
- For locally sourced, seasonally produced, creative and inspiring food Blue Jay or Salon win hands down. French & Grace does delicious middle eastern wraps and Okan because the staff are wonderful, the sake potent and their speciality Okonomiyaki pancakes unlike anything else in London.
- Now it’s summer, Brockwell Park is a must visit! There’s nothing comparable to a sunrise swim in the Brockwell Lido – the best place to build an appetite before heading onto Brixton Village for brunch and the best independent shopping! The Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses is also an amazing place to make real connections amongst such a diverse community, they run natural dye workshops using the plants grown on site. Whilst the walled garden inside the park is my favourite space to escape to for a few moments of complete peace and stillness.
The Keep Boutique is open 11:00 – 18:30 Monday to Friday, 10:00 – 18:00 Saturday, and 11:00 – 17:00 Sunday.
