People Tree turns 28 this year.
A pioneer in sustainable Fair Trade fashion, our story started in 1991. The core mission has stayed the same over the past three decades since award-winning social entrepreneur Safia Minney founded the company. Every product is made to the highest ethical and environmental standards from start to finish. We launched our first fashion range to meet the Global Organic Textile Standard certified by the Soil Association and were the first fashion company to be awarded the World Fair Trade Organisation product label. These certifications guarantee People Tree’s dedication and compliance to the principles of fair trade, covering fair wages, good working conditions, transparency, environmental best practice and gender equality.
We’re so excited to be celebrating 28 years of business this year. It’s a privilege to look back over this time and see how far we have come and how many communities and businesses we have supported along the way.
Here are some of our achievements over the last 28 years.
1st organic supply chain developed with Assisi.
The close partnership between People Tree and Assisi Garments meant that ours was the first supply chain entirely in the developing world to achieve the Soil Association Global Organic Textile Standards mark. Assisi Garments makes many of People Tree’s jersey pieces in soft organic and Fairtrade certified cotton, from yoga wear, essentials and printed tees. Assisi Garments also spins the organic cotton at their recently opened Spinning factory. The organic cotton and the supply chain is Fairtrade and GOTS certified certified in India and is then transformed into beautiful garments.
5 Certifications: GOTS, PETA, WFTO, FLO & SOIL Association
People Tree is proud to work with certified producers and their supply chains from the raw material to the finished fabric and garment. Our different certifications mean that our textile products have been produced in factories adhering to strict environmental and social standards. Certification organizations are responsible for ensuring that these standards are followed and respected. If a brand or producer has these certifications, it ensures that they are environmentally friendly and social responsible.
Global Organic Textile Association: The aim of the GOTS standard is to ensure organic status for textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labelling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.
PETA: Our organic cotton, organic linen and TENCEL ™ products are certified by PETA. PETA was founded in 1980 and is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals. PETA is an international non-profit charitable organization based in the US with affiliates worldwide. Garments with the PETA stamp have been designed from sustainable and eco-friendly fibres. This stamp guarantees an animal free supply chain and is suitable for vegans.
World Fairtrade Organisation: WFTO is the home of fair traders: producers, marketers, exporters, importers, wholesalers and retailers that demonstrate 100% commitment to Fair Trade and apply the 10 WFTO Principles of Fair Trade to their supply chain. WFTO provides space for people to connect and work together, exchange best practices, forge synergies and speak out for Fair Trade – all working towards a sustainable and fair global economy.
Fairtrade Cotton: Fairtrade International (FLO) is a non-profit organization focusing on the empowerment of farmers and workers in developing countries through trade. As Fairtrade has grown, FLO have developed new ways to connect farmers to business to increase their Fairtrade sales, bring more Fairtrade benefits to them and give people more ways to support Fairtrade farmers.
FLO independently check that their standards have been met by the farmers, workers and companies that are part of products’ supply chains. In order to reassure consumers that this has taken place, they use the FAIRTRADE license.
Soil Association: The Soil Association is the largest UK certification body for GOTS. The only way to be sure that textile products have been both produced organically and made in factories adhering to strict environmental and social standards is to look for the Soil Association and/or the GOTS logo. These demonstrate that the fibre was produced organically, processed to strict environmental standards under good working conditions in the factories, and has been certified by an independent, third party along the whole supply chain.
At People Tree, we see it as our mission to work closely with people in developing countries to build viable businesses that can sustain communities. We pass on our knowledge and provide financial assistance when needed so that these fledgling businesses can not only meet our high production standards, but also develop competitive, desirable products. We work with 14 producers in various parts of the world, from Portugal to India.
Each Fair Trade group is unique, with some set up specifically to deal with a particular issue, or help a specific community. People Tree sources over 90% of our products and materials from the following Fair Trade (WFTO) groups. Find out more about our individual producers here.
